The Court of the Air

The Court of the Air - Stephen Hunt The Court of the Air is a really good concept that starts off with a bang and then just kinda goes absolutely nowhere. It's just bogged down by too many unnecessary characters and too much freaking plot. I was left with a mild irritation and a large amount of confusion.

The start of the book wasn't so bad actually, I mean that's why I read the whole thing in the first place. I immediately connected with Molly's character, a little laundry girl with big dreams. I mean, who wouldn't? Then we meet Oliver, a kid who had lost his parents. I didn't connect so well with him as he was just angsty about well, everything.

The start was like, BOOM ACTION, all this running away and dying and Doing Things and Meeting New People and I really got into it, I couldn't stop reading. But after a hundred pages or so I started to get really confused about just how many different characters wanted to say their piece and I just lost all sense of what the fuck was even happening.

It would have been better to just stick with three characters - Molly, Alpheus and Oliver. I loved Alpheus and wanted to get to know him properly, but I only got a paragraph or so from him every 50 pages. It was pretty tedious. Meanwhile, Molly's doing fuck knows what and Oliver is wandering around with er... his Uncle's friend? I lost track. In fact so did the book. All the Important Plot Points at the start of the book were kinda swept aside for some garbled rubbish and when we did find out something that should have been Important, it was kinda quickly garbled at us so I have no idea why Oliver and Molly are special, they just are.

Not going to lie, I skimmed the last hundred pages. And then re-skimmed twice and I have no idea what the fuck happened.I have no idea who lived or died and what with the sheer amount of characters I'm not surprised. I won't be continuing with this series as I have 0% interest in it anymore. Which is a shame, it could have gone somewhere.
